One of the many beauties of Gozo being a small island in the Mediterranean, is the multiple spots from where you can watch the sun setting over the horizon.
Having a sunset beach picnic is so relaxing and a great alternative to just eating dinner at home. Every sunset is unique so you can never see the same one. Plan a picnic at the beach for the next sunset and you will be so happy that you did!
Below you can find top spots where to watch the sun setting in the horizon while enjoying some Gozitan traditional food:
Dwejra – The Dwejra Bay area is a geological and ecological haven, situated on the western shore of Gozo. Although Dwejra lost one of its most important geological feature the Azure Window, it still has a lot to offer such as the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock. It is very reachable by foot, and a romantic sunset picnic can be enjoyed on the shore.
Sanap Cliffs – Situated on the southern coastal side of Gozo, this is one of the highest points on the island. The Sanap Cliffs are approximately 130-meter tall limestone cliffs plunging vertically into the deep Mediterranean Sea. This place is reachable by car and has a parking spot 300m away from the viewpoint. It has a lovely walk on a narrow stretch of road and even has benches where one can some lovely Gozo delicatessen while watching the sun setting down.
Citadel – This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a small fortified town overlooking Victoria. Located right on a flat-topped hill in the middle of the island, the Cittadella offers several excellent spots for watching the sun set over the rolling hills and valleys of Gozo. We recommend visiting this fortified city for at least a few hours before sunrise so that you have ample time to admire the unique medieval architectures that characterise this fortified town before making way to the ramparts where you will be greeted with fantastic views of the whole island stretching in every direction. This medieval fortified city is accessibly by foot and in addition it is very close to one of our outlets which makes your picnic much more easier.
Xlendi – Xlendi Bay is located at the bottom of a very steep valley starting from the village of Kercem which is located very close to the capital city. It is a seaside village located on the southwest of the Island. The popular snorkelling, swimming, and diving spot is the quintessential sunset location for opacarophiles who tend to visit Xlendi in Gozo. While the bay and adjacent promenade are relatively small compared to other beaches, this factor does not take away from the number of visitors who make their way to the beach to enjoy the eye-catching sunsets that it has to offer.
Bonus: Xwejni – Ix-Xwejni, a shallow bay with a small pebbly beach, can be easily reached through Marsalforn or iż-Żebbuġ on the Northern coast of Gozo. The area is characterised by a checkerboard of rock-cut salt pans protruding into the sea. The 350-year-old salt pans found at Xwejni Bay stretch about three kilometres along this coast and are more than just the perfect spot to get a scenic snap for your Instagram.
