The name ‘It-Tokk’ is derived from an old Maltese word which means a meeting place. This well-known store has been situated in a square, now Independence Square, for more than half a century, run by the Grech family, Frenc, and then passed to Celestino and his daughters Grace and Carmen. Carmen took over and continued the business along with her husband Jimmy, nowadays the business is run by the Gauci family.
The business was originally a green grocer, being in the centre of Victoria, the location was very convenient for many Gozitans to do their daily shopping. It-Tokk’s central location meant that tourists would often ask where they could find traditional products.
When we started off, traditional homemade products were dying out and they were hard to find, old recipes and traditional methods were in danger of being forgotten. In recent years, however, they have made a real comeback and now they are as popular as they used to be before.
The change from a grocer to a tourist shop selling traditional food was Jimmy’s idea, at first helped by his family including his mother. He started by including small items in the shop such as sun dried tomatoes, olives, and gozo cheese, until nowadays It-Tokk Gozo Traditional Food hosts more than one hundred different products, all made from fresh and local ingredients.
In 2013, the need was felt to open a new and larger outlet in Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village in Gharb, Gozo, where products could be packed and produced more conveniently, while also showcasing most of them. Nowadays, It-Tokk doesn’t only sell from these two outlets in Gozo but its products can be found in various shops around Malta.
